War and Poverty
There is a disturbing relationship between war and poverty. War causes poverty and poverty causes war.
The first makes sense. When we see the graphic images and hear the stories that are fed to us from conflict zones around the world, it is not hard to imagine how war or conflict can worsen the conditions of poverty. Researchers identify two primary reasons - one, war hinders economic growth and obstructs normally functioning market economies. And, two, war causes the diversion of resources away from other budget needs like health care and education for investment in military priorities. But I would suggest that there is a third, and perhaps even more powerful, reason. The devastation and loss that comes from war has a deep, traumatizing - even paralyzing -- effect on the lives of people.
