The 21st Century Woman
Life for women in the 21st century couldn't be better, right?

After all, women have greater levels of equality, power, health, and well-being than ever before. A 2005 report by the World Economic Forum named Sweden the "most advanced country" for women in the world. This country has the richest history of women's rights going back to 1845 when women were granted equal rights to inherit property. Today, over half the Swedish parliament are women, women make up over 60% of all college students, and gender roles have blurred -- as one Swedish website puts it, "In our country, women drive the buses and men push the baby buggies."

Focus: The Women Behind the Beads
While the almost-instant success of Strands of Hope has been gratifying, the most fulfilling aspect of the project has been the unmistakable growth among the village women who make the beads.

"While Strands of Hope provides a means for our employees to earn a salary, it is more about empowering the women and promoting self-reliance," Lowna Gie, ChildVoice program advisor explains. "It is about providing women with the strength and power to change themselves, their families, their communities, and, ultimately, northern Uganda."

Women Behind the Beads
Of the 21 village women currently employed as bead makers for Strands of Hope . . .
•  10 were abducted by the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA).
•  18 had family members killed by the LRA.
•  14 had family members abducted by the LRA.
•  19 lived in Internally Displaced Persons camps.
•  18 have biological children.
•  14 have taken in orphans and/or children whose parents could not care for them.
•  all range in age from 19 to 51 years old.

The women of northern Uganda are experiencing independence, growth and self- sufficiency through programs that organizations like ChildVoice International are providing. They are beginning to earn fair wage through opportunities like the bead project-- gaining skills to provide for their families and restoring their lives with hope and confidence.
